Yes! Most of our customers are in the same boat. All of our staff are artists and are around to give you advice or techniques. If you would like to exercise your creative juices and paint anything you want, you can come for freestyle painting. If you would like a bit more step-by-step guidance, then you can join a workshop, where there is a workshop instructor will show a group how to complete a painting, by instructing you to create a painting based on a sample painting or a specific technique.
For freestyle painting, you are welcome to paint anything you want, anytime we are open as long as we have space. We have books of ideas for inspiration to get your creative juices flowing. After you’ve decided what to paint, we’ll explain to you how the paint station works and if you have any questions, we’re always around to give you advice or techniques. We’ll be around to make sure everyone is on track and having fun!
It’s based on canvas size, and this includes all the paints, supplies, canvas, and we’re always around to help with ideas, techniques and advice.
For adult workshops and kids workshops, the workshop instructor will show the group how to complete the painting step by step from blank canvas to a finished painting based on a sample painting at a preset date & time. Adult workshops are geared towards those ages 15+ and kids workshops are for children ages 5-14. Technique workshops is a hybrid between regular workshops where everyone paints the same thing and freestyle painting where it’s not guided; we teach you techniques and then you can create your own piece based on the technique at a preset date & time. Family workshops are guided step-by-step workshops where we allow your whole family to paint collaboratively on one bigger canvas. Pair Up! workshops are guided step-by-step workshops where we show you how to create a painting that connects across two canvases, so bring a friend so you can each paint on one canvas.
Since painting requires fine motor skills, we recommend painting independently for painters ages 5+. If you would like to paint with your toddler, we suggest making it a collaborative session with an adult and toddler. Adult workshops are geared towards those ages 14+ and kids workshops are for children ages 5-14. For events involving alcohol, alcohol can only be purchased by customers that are 19+.
All workshops are meant for beginners. If you’re really nervous about painting for the first time, we suggest starting off with an “Easy” workshop, then working your way up. Challenge workshops generally have a bit more detail and take a bit more time and patience vs. the easier paintings, but we still teach the basics and fundamentals for all levels of difficulty.
Our Toronto West and Markham locations have washroom facilities on the main floor; however, the Toronto East location only has washroom facilities in the basement. The studios are not fully wheelchair accessible.
We host paint parties where we have a wine & beer bar. At other times, you are welcome to bring liquor for your party – just let us know when you book. Please note that we charge a liquor fee of $30 and you will be responsible to obtain a Special Occasion Permit from the LCBO.
All sessions include access to our self-serve cafe bar. If you’re planning on bringing outside food or cake, let us know when you book so we can get tables ready for your party. Please note that we will supply table space and clean up for your group, and your group is responsible for cutlery, plates, and tablecloths, if needed.
We use water-based, non-toxic student-grade acrylic paint. We do provide aprons but accidents do happen and our paints can stain clothes, so we always recommend wearing clothes that you don’t care too much about. It is generally safe for pregnancy but if you are in doubt, we advise that you consult your doctor. You can view the MSDS report for our paints here.
For freestyle painting, each canvas can be shared by two people. After that, each additional “sharer” will be charged $10. For example, if you have three people sharing a full size canvas, it would be $45 + $10 x 1 additional sharers = $55 + HST. If you are coming for an event or workshop, you can share a canvas but each person would need to sign up for a separate ticket.
You can bring your own canvas for freestyle painting sessions only. If you would like to bring in your own canvas, we charge a $10 session fee and $5 per square foot of the canvas. For example, if you bring in a 12×12” canvas, then it would be $10 + $5 (12×12” = 1 square foot) = $15 + HST.
For parties and freestyle sessions, we will provide your group with a section of the studio so you are all together. For workshops, while we will try our best to place groups together, this cannot be guaranteed as placement is first come, first served.
We will only hold your reservation for 20 minutes past your reserved time and you will need to end at your scheduled end time. In the event that you are running late, we kindly ask that you please email us as soon as possible so that we may better accommodate accordingly.
Workshops have specified start and end times as stated on the schedule. For freestyle painting, it typically takes 2-3 hours to complete a session. During peak times, your session may be capped at a maximum of 3 hours so that we can give other customers a chance to paint as well.
